Why should you buy Five Ten Pro Freerider Pro MTB Shoes?

Grip

There are a few reasons to buy these shoes, but if I was to try and persuade you with just one it would be this – They stick to your pedals like velcro!

Now if you use flat pedals you will know exactly why this is so important.  You probably have scars on the back of your lower legs illustrating your personal story of pain and torment from using other shoes for mountain biking that are just not up to the job!

Look at the title of this website, a firm pedal strike to the back of the ankle after my foot has slipped off  feels like being hit with a sledgehammer, it has had me off the bike for weeks before. I need a secure footing I can rely on.

Of all the things you do not want when tackling a fast or technical trail is your feet sliding around like a Jack Russell on a frozen lake.

When you enter a section of  fast trail, the engagement with the pedal needs to be fast and precise.

Hacking it down a steep descent is not the time to be searching for that comfortable foot to pedal sweet spot,  before you know it you have hit the rough stuff off balance.

The same goes for sudden change in power, when you want to accelerate up or over something, in both instances your feet need to be planted.

The fives tens will provide assurity.

Protection

The toebox is reinforced with poron lining which hardens on impact, it works too. I have had plenty of  strikes to my outer toes and zero injuries.

The heel is also reinforced to the same high standard, and the tongue and the rest of the shoe has a feel good protective padding.

They do fill you with confidence that out on the trail any little knocks will be deflected easily.

Comfort and durability

These are very comfortable and I found them to be true to sizing. They are in fact so comfortable I wear them to work and out and about so they are also very durable.

In my job my feet get wet a lot and I find these to keep dry a lot longer than hiking boots/shoes that I have used in the past.

The sole is very stiff which really helps with pedal power and When out on the trail I find the grip on the terrain when doing the mandatory hike a bike up steep sloppy inclines to be more than capable.

They feel quite light on your feet and straight out of the box they felt awesome, no rubbing or blisters.

Cost

These MTB shoes are not the cheapest and I had heard a lot of good things about them a long time before I finally decided to purchase some ahead of an MTB trip to the Forest Of Dean.

I wish I had bought them sooner , I like them so much I am now on my third pair and  I think they are worth every penny.

They are normally about £130.00 but can be picked up in the sales for significantly less.

How these MTB shoes compare to other shoes

I am going to be completely honest with you, I have not tried any other MTB-specific footwear. ( Apart from SPD’s let’s not go there)

I have only used either normal training shoes, skating shoes or hiking shoes.

– I rode to the top of Skiddaw in the Lake District in a pair of reebok classics, the rain was pouring down, my feet were soaked and the soles were slippery to say the least.

One of the best features I like about the Five Ten Pro Freeriders is that even in the most biblical of rain they keep your feet nice and toasty.

They also do not seem to lose any traction on the pedals when wet – Still like velcro.

I also found with other shoes I could feel the nobbles of the pedal design through the sole of the shoe which was uncomfortable or the pedal would get caught on the design of the shoe

 – With the freeriders the pedal engages with the shoe, they are very comfortable and the flat sole is made with mountain bikers in mind.

These shoes  have also eliminated my constant shuffling around of my feet searching for a stable and comfortable riding position.

Conclusion

Overall, the Five Ten Pro Freerider Pro MTB Shoes are a great investment for anyone looking for a good pair of quality mountain biking shoes.  I have no valid reason to change to another shoe and there really isnt anything I do not like about them.

They provide excellent grip and protection while still being comfortable and durable enough to last through many rides and anything else life throws at them!
