Surrey Hills MTB trails location

The Surrey Hills is an area of outstanding natural beauty covering an area of 163 sq miles. This article is going to focus on the well known trails surrounding Peaslake which in my opinion are the best MTB trails in the area for beginners.

Why are the MTB trails in Surrey Hills good for beginners?

The trails listed on this page will not have any large jumps or technical features making them a great option for anybody new to riding MTB trails in the Surrey Hills.

There are on some sections on all of the trails where there may be small jumps, drop offs/ step downs, rooty off camber sections or tight turns and berms.

All of the features are avoidable or rollable. This allows you to progress as you grow in confidence.

The terrain is also good in damp conditions and gives you some good traction in comparison to other local riding spots such as the South Downs which is primarily chalk and can be like riding on ice when it is wet.

It goes without saying always where good quality protective gear – Most importantly being a helmet!

The Trails

# 1 Barry knows best

Trail length 1.1 km

Location

One of the best-known and most-loved trails in the Surrey Hills, Barry knows best is flowy singletrack awesomeness. This trail has a bit of everything roots, small jumps, drops and berms. This trail can be a bit pedally in places so will also test your fitness a little!

You can really get some speed on this trail as your confidence grows,

It comes down the side of Holmbury Hill and spits you out on the road that leads to Peaslake village. You can also double back on yourself and head straight back up the bridleway to have another run.

I absolutely love this trail, it holds up really well even after periods of biblical rain. I have spent many a soaking wet afternoon just looping this trail with the bridleway.

#2 Supernova

Trail length 600m

Location

Another great flowing section of singletrack with bomb holes, drops and jumps. There is a very rooty off-camber section about halfway down, do not come in too hot!

This leads to walking bottom car park.

#3 John The Baptist

Trail length 1.2 km

Location

Another great Surrey Hills Mtb trail for beginners. Pick up speed through the trees it really is an absolute gem.  More roots, more flow and more features that are all rollable. The last section has table tops with some amazing berms. Leads you out into the walking bottom car park.

#4 Yoghurt Pots

Trail length 650 m

Location

A roller coaster of a ride with a gooey feel-good centre. There is nothing too technical here for beginners.

This trail is littered with bomb holes, can be a bit sloppy after rain but still so much fun.

Take a right at the bottom to continue on to Telegraph Row. take a left to loop back up for a second run.

#5 Telegraph Row

Trail length 1.2 km

Location

This trail is an absolute must for beginners. Lovely flowing singletrack. You can really get some speed on here. There are a few rooty step downs towards the lower third of the trail, Rutty in places, keep your pedals level and enjoy the ride.
